Antique early 20th Century African-American Folk art memory jugAn antique early 20th Century Folk art memory jug. This double handles terracotta pot has been completely covered in pieces of tiles in a mosaic design. Memory jugs originate from the late 19th and early 20th Century as a craft which originated in African and African American burial practises. These jugs migrated to America as part of the slave trade and became popular with the craft pursuits of the Victorians. This example measures 22cm H x 14cm W.

The painting has a lovely impasto texture to it in areas

The basket measures 45cm Diameter across the centre x 16cm D

The last numeral of the date is illegible

Measurements are 12cm W x 19cm H

The glass is bevelled and slightly foxed and they are beautifully decorative and in completely oroginal condition
