A Large French Gesso Faux Bois & Floral Carved Oval Wall Mirror c.1875-90Origin: FrenchPeriod: 3rd RepublicProvenance: UnknownDate: c. 1875 90Height: 47"Width: 37"Depth: 5"The large and wonderfully decorative stained plaster and gesso faux bois and floral crested mirror, at nigh on four feet high, the original (?) oval mercury glass mirror plate now beautifully clouded and foxed with age, encased by simulated naturalistic wood, each bound together with simulated rope, to a large floral spray with flower heads to the top

There is perhaps an Art Deco influence to the bag but it is not overtly Art Deco per se in design

the printer's symbol or pointing hand has a long history

The first veterinary school was founded in Lyon

this is one of those mirrors you find lurking in a creaky country house that has a thousand stories of wet Labradors and strong cigars

Both are complete with the original cut glass stoppers and tin lids

One has as makers stamp which possibly reads ‘Paul Penkins’ (

An unusual and rather magical table with large decorative appeal

being so wonderfully loose

Beautifully pure taxidermy

The powder or duck egg blue velvet upholstery is original and in pretty good shape with some minor wear to the arms

but then A J Rowley began to commission artists to make designs specifically for wood panels
